Grandma Hazel Freeman's Bread Pudding

  • Soak 6 slices of dry cubed bread in 1 1/2 cups of warm milk.
  • Add a dash of salt
  • Combine and beat well
    • 2 egg yolks
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 3/4 tsp. vanilla
    • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg

    and add to the bread and milk mixture

  • Add 1/4 cup raisins or chopped dates.
  • Stir lightly with fork
  • If you do not wish to top with meringue, whip egg whites until stiff and fold in here
  • Bake in oval or square deep dish at 350 degrees for approximately 50 minutes
  • If you want meringue, bake the pudding until done.
  • Beat until stiff
    • 2 egg whites
    • 1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
    • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Spread on top of baked pudding.
  • Brown in hot oven at 425 minutes for 3 to 4 minutes.
