The Attack on Mr. Pelosi

Lots of Shame to Go Around

The attack on Mr. Pelosi was a tragedy.

The individuals who have heaped invective on Speaker of the House Pelosi leading to this attack should be ashamed of themselves.

The Republican Party should be ashamed of itself that it has let the invective go on unchecked as well, paid for the invective in political advertising for its candidates, and for any part its members have had in promoting such ideas.

Finally, anyone who has cheered the attack secretly or in public or wished that the Speaker of the House of Representatives had been home should feel very ashamed of themselves.

Our Christian Duties

As Christians, we are called on to do two things above all. We are commanded to love God first - with all our heart, mind, and strength. The second command is to love your neighbor as yourself. When the lawyer asked Jesus who his neighbor included, Jesus gave the parable of the good Samaritan who helped the man severely beaten by robbers and left for dead. Samaritans were not fans of the Jews and vice versa. Yet the good Samaritan showed kindness and provided aid and lodging to the Jew who was attacked when the Jewish priest and Levite would not. Jesus asked who of these three the neighbor was, and the lawyer replied that it was the Samaritan. Jesus command was to act like the Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37).

We won't always agree with legislation that is passed. We probably won't even agree with all legislation passed by our own party. But if we don't agree with something, as a Christian, we have many avenues we can take in response. None of them end in violence.

We can write to our representatives and senators while legislation is being written or about to be voted on to let them know our opinions. We can write to others who are involved in the legislative process. Just how much weight our comments will have depends largely on where you live and how many people are trying to influence the legislation in a particular direction. Sadly, money talks loudest with most politicians. Security theater is pretty high as well.

If your representatives and senators aren't responsive to the people who elected them, vote for someone else next time. Let them know that your vote for them is at stake and then follow through. Encourage someone with similar likes and dislikes as yourself to run for office. Run for the office yourself.

Take your concerns to the web or write letters to the editor at your local newspaper. Picket peacefully in public areas.

There are many peaceful possibilities. But the one thing you shouldn't do is attack someone because you disagree with their legislative or policy votes. Try to keep the disagreements you share limited to the legislation at hand and not the politician themselves. The same principle applies as with sinners - separate the sin from the person. Keep loving or at least not hating the person, but hate the sin.

What Does Scripture Say?

Romans 12-13 is instructive.

12:1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

12:10Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

12:11Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

12:12Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

12:14Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

12:17Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

12:18If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

12:19Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

12:20Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

12:21Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

13:1Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

13:2Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

13:3For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

13:4For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

13:5Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

13:6For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

13:7Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

13:8Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

13:9For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

13:10Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Our Response to Scripture

If you think there are problems with politicians, pray that the Holy Spirit will convict them to do right and become Christian if they aren't already. Pray that if they are a Christian they will listen to God better. Pray that they will put the country, state, and constituents' interest ahead of their own interest. Make sure that the beam is out of your own eye before going to look for motes in politician's eye.

But in the end, if they don't do what you want, turn the other cheek. Evil is not overcome with evil, but with good. Vengeance is God's to deal out and not ours. He sees all sides to everything and is a righteous and just judge. No human being, no matter how great and perfect you think you are, can see all the sides and ramifications of an issue like God can. If there is truly a problem, He will eventually deal with it in a time frame that suits Him.

Also, realize that the Holy Spirit is not going to encourage a politician to work in a way that is against the will of God. Surprisingly, things happen in the world and legislation gets passed according to God's will for the world that might not align with your own belief in what should be happening. These things you must simply accept and be at peace with.

One day we will be able to ask questions of someone in heaven who knows more than we do about why things happened the way they did. Probably the answer will be that Christians didn't seek God's will enough, pray for His will to be done enough, try to get rid of sin and trespass in their own lives enough, let the Spirit work through them in both gifting and especially fruit, and similar things that may seem like platitudes but are really truths.

Jesus promised His church would do great things because He went to His Father in heaven. He asked us to be full of the Holy Spirit and have faith. If the world looks dark, we should look first to ourselves and stoke the light within us. It's what we're called to do. We aren't called to take hammers to anyone - physical or symbolic.
